Debbie,
I got this photo of you while you were working. I think it is more current than the one your mom posted.

Love, Aunt Joycie

Nelson's Birthday

Happy Birthday, Dad. We think of you so often. Now that Tom and Mom are there with you I'm sure you are smiling a lot. I wish I could hear your laugh or your "That's tough, TUFF!!" I spelled that wrong all the way through High School. It seems like we didn't have you with us for long, but we are grateful for the time we had. You keep my baby girl Gabi in line. We miss all of you so much.
Love, Joyce

Wow, this is amazing! I would like to thank JVH for all his hard work and taking the time to make this wonderful tool for all of us to stay in touch. I felt like I was at a family reunion while looking at all the pics. If someone has a better pic of me, please post. Cause I look better in real life. Cousin Ronnie, you look great!! I miss you! Call me you have my digits! Does anyone have a pic of Tammy, Jimmy, Amada and Michael that they can post?

When I post a recipe (10% of ingrdients withheld) Do not modify until you've made my version! Haha. Johnny and Mom have done this in the past : )

I gotta go make dinner. I will w/b later. Bye for now. Debb Webb

The Hubbard Family Rundown

Hello, Everyone, I wanted to give everyone a rundown on me and on my family.  By the way, in case you don't know, I am the oldest son of Linda Sumner.  Back to my family, we are all in “transition” in our household.  Our four boys are grown and moved out and we are left with our three young girls at home.   Jan and I are enjoying the change.  Don't’ get me wrong, we liked all the ruff and tuff stuff from the boys—its just different.  Anyway, AJ our oldest, lives in Huntington Beach CA.  He is working as a waiter at the local Macaroni Grill.  He loves it because it gives him an opportunity to use the Italian language he learned while serving, his LDL mission, in Milan, Italy.  He is enjoying the beach and the wonderful So. Cal weather. Currently, he is trying to save up and get back to his education.
Zachary, our 23 year old, is kind of an entrepreneur.  He is trying his hand at all kinds of business.  Currently, he is working with an investor who buys and sells both businesses and real estate—yes, there is still opportunities out there.  Lately Zac, has been getting into modeling. He loves to work hard and to go dancing.
Nathan, our 20 year old, is going to Weber State College.  He is finishing up on his second year. He is working at a local grocery store full time, taking a full-time class schedule and still finding time to lift weights.  He is getting pretty buffed.  Nathan was a wrestler in High School and he placed at state.
Logan, is our warrior, he is finished with army boot camp and he has started his training to become a mechanic.  He loves the Army.  For more on Logan, go to Archives on this page and see “A Very Special Warrior,” towards the bottom—just click on it.  He will be home sometime in May.  Logan was a wrestler though-out High School.  He too placed at state.
Allyson, is our butterfly and our self-disciplinarian.  She is so dedicated at being the best in so many different areas.  She is an accomplished violinist, and classical ballet dancer.  For years I have been asking her to pick one discipline.  Because she has not made a choice, we have continued to pay for her lessons and she has continued to excel in both areas.  She is currently a Sophomore at Weber High.  She is taking several concurrent AP, college credit, classes.  By the time she finishes High School, she will be on her second year of college. Today, both her and her mom are heading up to Idaho Falls for a ballroom dance competition.  I forgot to say, she is on a Ballroom dance team.  She is a “High Honor Student” and she just turned 16 and can now date—life is good for her.
Jamilee, just turned 12, last month.  She is super sweat and kind to everyone and to everything. Every Saturday she helps a local veterinarian with clinic.  Currently she is memorizing her medical terminology for veterinarian work.  She is a member of the “Kids Are Music” program here in Utah.  This is a corol group of approximately 300 kids who sing and dance.  Jamilee is also a pianist.  However, if I asked her what she likes to do best, she would say, ride horses. Last year she was 1st Attendant for our Posse club.  Posse is a group of riders who compete in barrels, poles, keyhole and other horseback riding events.  Her horse “Paco” is an appaloosa gelding.  She truly looks like she is floating through the air as she rides, as one, with that horse. By the way, all three girls were in posse and all three girls won many events (Ally's horse is a Quarter Horse).  Jamilee, loves to read books/short stories and she love the great out doors. Today, we will take a long hike, even though it is suppose to snow.
Hannah, is our 9-year-old firecracker.  She is full of energy.  Both physical energy and in her inquisitive nature—she can talk non-stop for hours—this is no exaggeration.  Hannah is our second soccer player (Her older brother, AJ, paved the way in this area).  Her hero is Mia Ham, of women’s college soccer and of Olympic fame.  Hannah is always moving.  Even though she is home schooled, she will get up extra early so she can walk her friend Megan, to the bus stop. Megan will come to our house for piano lessons, before leaving on the bus for public school. Hannah loves our dogs.  Everywhere she goes, she brings them with her. (We have two Labrador retrievers—Lexie, a chocolate lab and Emma-a white lab.)  She too is an excellent horseman. When Hannah rides her horse, Patience (an Arabian), she looks like a prancing deer—you know the kind of jumping trout on all fours. She is beautiful to watch. She rides with have one hand on the rains and the other hand straight out to the side, like she is conducting a choir to the side.  Oh! I forgot to say, both her and her horse are always on a trot—if this horse didn’t have the Arabian stamina, it would be dead from running all the time.  Hannah is also learning to play the piano.  Sitting at the piano bench to practice is as stationary as she gets. She is our caboose and she is helping to keep us young.
Jan, what can I say about Jan?  She is “SUPER WOMEN.” She is the heart of our family. She organizes schedules, drives everyone everywhere, gives lessons, exercises, keeps house, plays, reads, teaches Jamilee and Hannah school, councils everyone, shops, sews, and she is either the leader or participates in all kinds of different groups—from weekly kids groups to colloquiums with other families.  She is an accomplished pianist—although she would never agree to that characterization.  Jan likes country music and she love to dance.  She is my best friend and confidant.  Her life and her legacy is her family.
Me, I am just the “FIRST DUDE” of the house.  I recently sold my publishing business (Jan. 1, 2009), so I am back in the hunt for a “real job.”  By the way, if you know of anyone I should talk with regarding either clinical laboratory or anatomical pathology, medical sales, let me know.  I am looking for contacts with Ameripath, ARUP, Amgen, or Myriad Genetics.  Thanks for allowing me this plug.  You never know where your next job lead will come form.  What else can I say?  I ran the local Posse Horsemanship group.  We took 1st place in the county—out of eleven other groups.  I am into both fresh and salt-water aquariums and I raise bees for honey. I have a half-acre garden—mostly weeds. I guess our biggest family activity is boating.  All of our kids love to wakeboard or tube.  We live down the street from a lake so we are able to go 2-3 times a week in the summer.  Frankly, as I write about myself, I sometimes wonder about living an inconsequential life.  I than only have to go as far as looking at my kids to know this could never be the case.  My wife Jan, each of my children and the LDS faith continues to enrich and enliven my life experience.  Life is good!  Well, that's if for now.  I hope I have not abused anyone’s senses.  Writing this was a surreal experience.  I look forward to seeing what everyone one else keys in on, with their post.  Enjoy!

P.S. Sorry, I will have to go to a different computer to get a some up-dated photos of family members.  They should be posted in a day or so.

Dixie Chelsea and Johnny

Chelsea and Johnny, I have read (and kept) emails you sent to your grandma about your travels and adventures of late. I would print them out so my mom could read them, she loved to visualize each story that was written in those "letters home." Would you be opposed to my posting some of them to let the rest of the family enjoy them? It would make my heart happy to share a little bit of something that made my mom smile. You can either email me joycehargrove@msn.com , call 512-917-4729 and I now have the option of carrier pigeon. (still new at that, but think I would have to drop bird off at your house first) Ok, email or call. OR better yet, do a post here and share them yourself :)
On another note, Dixie wasn't your mom, Auntie Audrey, married to Les when she died. She was pretty young wasn't she?

Fred and Margaret Freeman

I can't help but smile when I think of them. I remember Uncle Freddy as always laughing and making other people laugh. Jack, Gayle and Andi what do you remember about him and your mom? It was very sad when he passed away at such a young age. (Is this a downer? I really would like to get some insight as to what he and Auntie Margaret were like.) We went to visit Auntie Margaret soon after the funeral. I was very young and the only one able to go. It was on my birthday in November. After a little time I went over to Auntie Margaret and asked her something that almost gave my dad a heart attack. My mom was choking from shock. Fortunately, they all thought it was funny or I would have had to walk from Westchester. Auntie Margaret was also laughing all the time. The two of them, mom, dad, Auntie Audrey and Uncle Rockie had some good times. We always spent every New Years Day at the Freemans. I loved their house, it was cool. It had a long hallway and we'd take off our shoes so we could run and slide in just our stocking feet. That is until we got caught. With 6 kids our parents made sure we didn't make too much noise at other people's homes.

Our Paternal Grandma, Helen Cuddy Jordan

I remember hearing this story many, many years ago. When Grandma Helen and Pappy lived in Los Angeles, sometime around the 50's she had gone to the local liquor store (no 7-11's in those days). Not necessarily for liquor, probably cigarettes. At some point during her visit there, a thief wanna be tried to get her purse and also hold up the store. She got so mad she started hitting him over the head with her purse and he finally just ran away. Now, I would really like to believe this to be true, so if there is another version...wellllll, I think mine is better!

Dad's plane

I remember a trip we went on. I think it was just the younger kids this time. Mom refused to go up and made dad just taxi around the air field with us. It was exciting. Then there was the time he almost got thrown in jail for buzzing our house on Gordon St, in Long Beach. Had the FAA chasing him down. Posted by Joyce

LA river cruise

Then there was the time he and Hans, a lifelong friend, tried to run aground driving up the LA river. Needed money from insurance of totaling speed boat to buy new cabin cruiser. I think booze had something to do with that. Not sure if this was the boat directly after the speed boat or the next one. At any rate, fiasco failed. Some good samaritan came to their rescue. We eventually got the Virginia I.

Grandpa Thomas's Plane

Rodger, told me a story Grandpa told him about flying his airplane.  He said he was flying his plane over the mountains close to his home.  He decided to see how close to the ground he could get.  He flew closer and closer to the ground.  Just as he crested the mountain top,  and all of a sudden, the down draft on the other side started sucking him down to the ground.  His plane was on its way down.  He had to gas the engine and immediately pull up.  He claimed he thought he was a goner.

Mouse Droppings-Health Alert

EVERYONE, PLEASE READ!!!!
A stock clerk was sent to clean up a storeroom in Maui , Hawaii. When he got back, he was complaining that
the storeroom was really filthy and that he had noticed dried mouse/rat droppings in some areas. A couple of days later, he started to feel like he was coming down with a stomach flu, complained of sore joints & headaches, and began to vomit. He went to bed and never really got up again. Within two days he was severely ill and weak. His blood sugar count was down to 66, and his face and eyeballs were yellow. He was rushed to the emergency at Pali-Momi, where he was diagnosed to be suffering from massive organ failure. He died shortly before midnight . No one would have made the connection between his job and his death, had it not been for a doctor who specifically asked if he had been in a warehouse or exposed to dried rat/mouse dropping s at any time. They said there is a virus (much like the Hanta virus) that lives in dried rat and mouse droppings. Once dried, these droppings are like dust and can easily be breathed in or ingested if a person does not wear protective gear or fails to wash face and hands thoroughly. An autopsy was performed on the clerk to verify the doctor's suspicions. This is why it is extremely important to ALWAYS carefully rinse off the tops of canned sodas or foods, and to wipe off pasta packaging, cereal boxes, and so on. Almost everything you buy in a supermarket was stored in a warehouse at one time or another, and stores themselves often have rodents. Most of us remember to wash vegetables and fruits but never think of boxes and cans. The ugly truth is, even the most modern, upper-class, super store has rats and mice. And their warehouse most assuredly does! Whenever you buy any canned soft drink, please make sure that you wash the top with running water and soap or, if that is not available, drink with a straw. The investigation of soda cans by the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta discovered that the tops of soda cans can be encrusted with dried rat's urine, which is so toxic it can be lethal. Canned drinks and other foodstuffs are stored in warehouses and containers that are usually infested with rodents, and then they get transported to retail outlets without being properly cleaned. Jack Freeman-Family Update

Reported by Jack Freeman, Dear family
Regarding Janet Freeman, Cousin
Well, its been 7 weeks since Janet's knee replacement surgery. She has been walking with out walker or cane for over 4 weeks. Our days are full of exercise and stretching. 3 times a week at physical therapy, 2 times in the pool (its warm) and then to David the trainer to work on upper body strength. And last week she began placing a removable cast on to the repaired leg 7 to 8 hours. It is to stretch the leg back to its original position.
Her spirts are high, however still has pain on an ongoing basis.
She is accepting visits, calls and mail and e-mail (janetfreeman@socal.rr.com) at home, and would love to hear from you.

Recipe-Quickie Cream of Potato Soup

First recipe for the Thomas Blog! "Quickie Cream of Potato Soup For a Cold, Wintry day"

Serves 2-4 (depending on how piggy they are)

While you are microwaving the first of 2 medium to large potatoes, sauté (I used the sauce pan I was going to cook soup in) 1/2 cup each 3/4" sliced celery and diced onion in butter. Add favorite spices, I used dill, Pico De Gallo Con Limon, lemon pepper, house seasoning (Google it) and whatever I could reach in cabinet (I'm short). While nuking the second potato open 2 cans of Cream of Mushroom soup (guess you could use Cream of Celery instead. I prefer mushroom myself) add just one can of milk to sauce pan mixture. I cut up the potatoes in cubes, squishing about half of one potato, and added to sauce pan mixture. Bring to a low boil, turn down and let simmer for about 10 or 15 minutes, yummy!!

I have added chunks of chicken and/or fresh sautéed mushrooms. Go crazy throw some shrimp in it!

Here is the picture that was on the wall for many, many years--Joyce

Tommy Thomas

To All:
Here is Tom's Memorial card.  We will have it at the Memorial/Reunion.  It will be very sad not to have him nor mom/auntie/grandma/great-grandma there.  He had chosen some songs for his funeral.  We didn't find them, but I'll get words for a couple and we can have a little sing-a-long.  I understand there are many little musicians in the Hubbard family that can play.  Notably the violin.  How awesome would that be?  Tom always liked the bag pipes when mom's neighbor played them while rehearsing.  Wonder if we could get him to play a few songs while we are at the park.  I also, have a singer in my family now, Briana, Luch's youngest daughter.  She sang at Luch and Ronnie's latest marriage. (They've only been married twice)  She has a beautiful voice.  I'm including a photo that was on the wall for many, many years.
Love Joyce.

P.S. Click on Uncle Tom's memorial card above to fill your screen.  Also, the picture Aunt Joyce is referring to, is on the next post.  jvh

Heather got married in October and I have lots more photos.  WHERE ARE THEY!!??

Hi everyone, this is going to be fun.  We are so proud of Logan.  Keep up the good work.  We finally moved into our new house.  We are still unpacking though.  I can't find my good knifes, yet, or a million other things I keep thinking about.  It will all come together soon--I hope.  Joey is doing wonderful.  Sam is also doing great.  They are building a garage for a neighbor on the next street.  It has been so cold here lately with the wind and all.   Then we have days in the 70's.  I will share a recipe in my next blog.  It is really good.  I am still trying to make jewelry.  I go to another class tomorrow.  It is a lot of fun.   Everyone, send me your favorite colors.
My love to all, Mom, Grandma, Aunt and Sister.

Help!

I would like to add another area that includes a calender.  With this "tool" we can add or schedule family activities and birthdays.  If anyone knows where to find this "tool" please call or email me with the information.
Thank you for the help and have a great day,

A Very Special Warrior

Logan, on the right, has graduated from "boot camp" for the Army.  (Nathan, Logan's older brother, is on the left in the picture).  He graduated on February 8th, 2009 from Ft. Jackson in So. Carolina.   Logan also was awarded  two gold coins.  One for being a squad leader and the other for beating out a group of 2000 (yes, this is correct--2000) fellow warriors in hand to hand combat.  Logan says, "boot camp was a piece of cake compared to wrestling for Weber High School.  Here we get to eat all you want and I don't have to worry about my weight."   Logan, as squad leader, picked the biggest guy on the squad.  Both he and this guy climbed up on top of the obstacle course wall.  Their squad won first place because Logan and this guy would literally pull and throw over the wall, each of their team members.   Logan is now in a hold pattern at the base.  He will start his formal "mechanic" training starting next week.  He will be home in May 09.  Logan we love you and we are so very proud of you.  Please keep this special warrior in your prayers.

An Open Invitation
